Eddie Howe is set to make a late decision on Toon duo Kieran Trippier and Callum Wilson ahead of Sunday’s crunch encounter with Man City. The manager will update fans on both of his returning players’ involvement at City today when he faces the Press at Benton.
The duo have trained this week but Howe must assess whether they are fully up to speed with bench roles not yet ruled out by the United gaffer. Wilson is back from a calf injury after failing to appear since December while Trippier has recovered from a fractured metatarsal sustained against Aston Villa.
Wilson certainly made his case for selection when speaking on the BBC’s podcast yesterday and said: “I am fully charged. I’m back now [in] training. It’s been a good week. It’s been a long time coming but we’re there.”
But Howe will consult with his sports science team and will continue with a cautious approach as he did last week. Back then Trippier trained and was itching to get a slice of the action against Liverpool.
Howe, though, stated last Friday that he would remain patient even if that meant the pair had to wait until pre-season. Trippier and United are playing for a top 10 place in the last three matches.
Yet both stars are also hoping to catch the eye of Gareth Southgate for the UEFA Nations League fixtures. The Three Lions face trips to Hungary and Germany plus games at Wolverhampton against Italy and Hungary.
